New digital theatre project helps young people know the score when it comes to online radicalisation

Civic Digits is working with groups of young people in Edinburgh in a project opening up discussions about the impact of online ‘Incel’ culture.

Ground-breaking digital theatre group, Civic Digits is teaming up with Stellar QuinesYouthLink ScotlandZero Tolerance Scotland and Heart of Midlothian F.C. for an innovative new theatre co-production, Many Good Men addressing the issue of ‘Incel’ (involuntary celibate) culture and how masculinity is radicalised online.

Civic Digits’ Founder and Artistic Director, the award-winning playwright, Clare Duffy explains: “We're planning to support two groups of young people to write and direct two new forum theatre plays about the radicalisation of masculinity online. It will be performed by professional actors at Hearts FC stadium.”

Blending digital technology, gaming and live performance Civic Digits are known for creating innovative and interactive experiences that question what it means to be a digital citizen.

Civic Digits will work with groups of 15–18-year-olds in their communities over the next nine months to write and direct professionally produced and resourced 1-hour participatory forum performances, using digital technologies to unpack how performances of gender reinforce dominant patriarchal power structures.

The project will culminate in two live performances at Hearts FC football stadium in December 2023

Many Good Men is among 46 projects receiving a total of £1,580,005 National Lottery funding in this latest round of Creative Scotland’s Open Fund awards. At a glance, projects also include:

  • Dance artist Nadia Sewnauth’s family friendly hip-hop dance theatre piece from that aims to spark wider conversations around parents/carers continuing careers as artists and working alongside caring commitments.
  • The return of the 2023 editions of Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival and Edinburgh Festival Carnival.
  • A varied and wide-reaching programme of activity for Children’s Classical Concerts in Spring 2023.
  • The 18th East Neuk Festival, offering world-class live classical, jazz, roots, contemporary and community music, installations, pop-up events and community arts in venues throughout the East Neuk of Fife.
  • The 2023 iteration of Open Studios Hebrides, supporting local artists to promote, exhibit and sell their work.
